QPS                     1-2    Buncrana Hearts Res
This was one of the shocks of the round as Buncrana defeated a Point team who had performed well of late.An error in the point defence allowed Stephen McHugh possession but he fired wide from close range before at the other end a near post corner saw Brian McColgan head wide. The point had a let off then when Colm McLaughlin broke clear but an Adam Harkin last ditch tackle denied the young Buncrana player. Buncrana opened the scoring on 21 minutes when Karl Kelly hit a wind assisted forty yards free to the bottom corner past David McGeady. The point replied immediately after a scramble following a corner but the hearts defence managed to clear. On 35 minutes Buncrana’s Tommie Caldwell bore down on goal but fired wide when he should have hit the target. Before the break a Michael Nicholas corner fell to Raymond Buchanan who back flicked the ball over the bar from close range. On the resumption Buncrana doubled their lead on 48 minutes when a defender was caught in possession allowing McHugh to steal the ball and place it wide of the stranded McGeady. The point upped the pace with Dean Barron advancing on the right and crossing dangerously but it eluded all.On 68 minutes the points Colm McLaughlin’s free was parried by Patrick Quigley to Terry McColgan but his effort was cleared off the line by Gearoid Doherty. They got a lifeline on 76 minutes when Nicholas fed McColgan who lobbed the advancing Quigley from twenty yards. The point continued to press with Nicholas turning the defender but his shot lacked power to beat Quigley. They continued to push hard but the Hearts defence stood firm.

Saturday 23rd January
QPs 1 Illies Celtic 0
Played in Maginn Park on Saturday night the point started well with Raymond Buchanan's corner finding Oisin McColgan but he headed over at the near post. Illies replied and when Kevin O'Donnell beat a defender he saw his left footed shot well saved low to his right by David McGeady. O'Donnell had another opportunity but his effort was blocked by McColgan.Midway through the half Illies had appeals for a penalty waved away.On 34 minutes a short corner by Buchanan to Brian McColgan was returned to Buchanan but his cross was headed over by McColgan. The point struck for the only goal on 41 minutes after Adam Harkin's long ball from the right found Buchanan who controlled well sidestepped a defender and rolled the ball low past Noel McDermott from ten yards. Illies had a chance before the break when David Doherty crossed to the unmarked Aiden Doherty but his header was easily gathered by McGeady. On the resumption the point had the first chance when Colm McLaughlin's effort from twenty five yards deflected to Buchanan but his effort was also blocked. At the other end Paddy Doherty's twenty five yards free was held at the second attempt by McGeady. The points substitute Adrian McColgan advanced up the left but saw his cross taken off Terry McColgan's toes by defender David Doherty. McGeady had to be alert when Niall McDaid's deflected effort was turned behind on 80 minutes. The point's Colm McLaughlin beat the offside trap but was denied by the legs of McDermott who spread himself well. Illies pushed hard but were caught on the break when Anthony McColgan's header was cleared off the line and Terry McColgan's header came back off the bar.
