Club History
Quigleys Point Swifts were founded in 1975 by Donal Murray. The team comprised of locals from the surrounding Iskaheen and Muff areas. Starting with one senior mens team they enjoyed great success in the local Inishowen League and later on in the FAI Junior Cup. In 1985 they then joined the Derry & District League (D&D). In successive seasons they won Division 4, 3, and two, collecting the Mc Alinden Cup on the way. Two years later the team won the Division title and the coveted Bull Park 7s against a team which contained senior league players.
QPS made a clean sweep of trophies in Inishowen on 2 successive seasons winning the top cups, The Carthill cup, The McIvor cup and the League Championship. The club also won the League Championship on six out of seven seasons going undefeated on 2 of them.
QPS won the Carn cup in two successive seasons. The Anti-Fire Ulster cup when they defeated a strong Letterkenny Rovers side 3-1 on St Patricks Day 1980 at Maginn Park. They were beaten Semi Finalists in the Buncranna open cup, defeated 2-1 by old rivals Fanad Utd. QPS had 4 very successful seasons in the entering the
4 division and moving up to the 1st Division undefeated in the League and winning the Bishops Cup defeating the very successful Foyle Harps 2-1 on Easter Monday. They also won the prestigious Bull Park Sevens 1,000 Competition defeating Clifton Villa in the final 7-6 after being beaten a few years previously by Celtic Swifts 3-2.
From Strength to Strength
The team in Inishowen League football was managed by the late Donal Murray who must be the most successful manager of all time in the Junior Football in the Peninsula and a true gentleman. John Atchison took over when the club entered and he carried on the success of the club.
The club returned to the Inishowen League under the management of well known local school teacher Pat McGonigle and after an initial settling in period won numerous league and cups. It was then decided to enter the Ulster Senior League and Vincent McColgan managed for a period at the beginning.
Bryan bell was next in charge and the team steadily progressed. Bryan Bell and Dee Dunne joined in a partnership which proved to be very successful winning the league for the first time defeating Letterkenny in a play off in Maginn Park and retaining the league the following season which was no mean achievement in a High Standard of Competition. Brian McIvor took over next and under great pressure with a new squad he also had a very successful season finishing 3rd in the league and winning the Knockalla cup for the first time and loosing in the semi final of the league cup.
Underage success
QPS has a comprehensive youth policy which has bean very successful in Inishowen football. The club has also produced some players who have been capped underage at International level and players who have played for the province and county. Vincy Mc Colgan and Pat Mc Gonagle were responsible for setting up the first youth teams in 1990 and in later years, Bryan Bell, Liam Barron and Sean Gallagher (The Golly-G) have taken over some of the responsibility. 14 years on the club has U/10, U/12, U/14,U/16 and U/18 boys and girls teams. The success of QPS over the years comes from our very successful youth system where we have teams competing in all coaches and managers who give their time freely to make these a success yearly.
Senior Ladies
We cannot finish without mentioning our ladies teams who also had their success over the years winning numerous cups under the guidance of Pat McGonagle and Liam Barron. The QPS ladies team have had a strong presence in Inishowen Ladies football for over 10 years and have a very strong future with the up and coming girls in the area.
